Selon l’Optical Society of America (OSA), des chercheurs du « Massachusetts Institute of Technology » (MIT) ont pu finaliser un appareil portatif destiné aux généralistes. Cet appareil, dont la forme rappelle les caméscopes classiques, permet de scanner la rétine et de diagnostiquer précocement les maladies qui lui sont liées.
Tout comme les appareils utilisés par les ophtalmologistes, ce nouveau dispositif fait appel à la technique de la Tomographie en Cohérence Optique (TCO) qui permet l’envoi de faisceaux de lumière infrarouge dans l’œil, en plus de diagnostiquer et de suivre les maladies du nerf optique.
Il ne reste plus qu’à trouver un moyen de réduire son prix pour encourager davantage les ophtalmologistes et les pédiatres à équiper leurs cabinets avec cet appareil portatif.
